YOUR VOICE -YOUR CHOICE
Could Your Vote Cost Ratepayers $400,000?
The upcoming by-election to be held on Saturday July 29th could have expensive and inconvenient consequences for our community.
At the end of this month we are being dragged back to the polling booths for a second time to select a new Mayor to lead our community. At the last election only 3 candidates came forward being Peter Besseling, Sharon Griffiths and myself, Peta Pinson. Those of you who voted in the September 2016 election will know, I came second to the Mayor in that election with almost 30% of the primary vote.
This time around there are five candidates for the Mayoral role and three of those are already elected current Councillors being; Cr Sharon Griffiths, Cr Lisa Intemann and Cr Robert Turner.
The other two candidates are Lauren Edwards (The Greens Party) and myself.
It is important our community goes to the polls being informed, as a vote for a current sitting councillor will send us back to the polling booth again this year for a second by-election. That would mean a possible third election for our Council in only 12 months.
Simply put, should any of the three councillors be elected as Mayor, the seat they hold on council will be vacated and will need to be filled by means of another by-election at a further cost to the ratepayer.
It is estimated that the cost of the September election was just over half a million dollars whilst this upcoming by-election is estimated to be around four hundred thousand dollars which will be paid for by the ratepayers of the Port Macquarie Hastings area.
Further to the cost is the inconvenience to our community to participate in the democratic process of voting. Think about the difficulties that the frail, the sick and the disabled experience during this time, who are all expected to make their way to a polling booth to vote.
There are only two candidates who will not cause the community any further inconvenience or cost after this by-election.
I am one of the two who will bring about a fresh perspective to Council and a vote for PINSON is a vote against a costly second by-election. The choice is yours.
